Kiss on New Years Eve
by nyedash on Nov.30, 2009, under Relationships
The tradition of kissing at the stroke of midnight on the first day of the Gregorian calendar is a conventional ritual for bringing in the New Year and celebrating the past year. Historically, the custom was practiced during the festivities of the ancient Romans at the merry and joyous celebration called the Festival of Saturnalia and has continued to subsist in our present day societal salutations. Historians also note that the English and Germans would mask themselves during this celebration, representing the evil spirits of the elapsed year, and when unveiled an ensuing kiss would denote the eradication and subsequent purification commemorating the New Year. Digressing, tradition and superstition adopted by contemporary culture becomes effortlessly adhered to and nonetheless embraced. So with promising resolutions in mind, the remembrance of the preceding year, grandiose pyrotechnics in the background and the standard Scottish melody of Robert Burns enveloping the climax of your night, don’t overlook the prolific midnight kiss. Mwah! Happy New Year NYC!
